Stoli Goes банкрот (Bankrupt)
Stoli Hits the Skids: From Vodka Czar to Chapter 11 Tsar
In a surprising turn of events, Stoli Group USA, the parent company of the party-starting vodka brand Stoli, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This move comes amid a series of financial challenges, including recent cyberattacks and legal battles.

What the Heck Happened?
Usually, the vodka business is straight forward. The stuff that comes off the still is basically vodka: nearly colorless, odorless, and flavorless (unless you count ethanol). No aging in barrels. Distill and sell, baby! But Stoli Group USA got caught in a perfect storm of problems:
Hacked Like a Cheap Router:
Recent cyberattacks turned their computer systems into a digital disaster and forced the company to resort to manual operations.
Legal Battles From Hell:
Back in Russia (Stoli's homeland, by the way, though the vodka itself is Latvian), they're embroiled in some legal stuff over who owns the rights to "Stolichnaya." The Russian government makes a state-owned version of the brand different than the Stoli we drink.
The Whole Liquor Market's Flatlining:
Turns out, people are cutting back on vodka these days. Well, all booze. Mad Men's Roger Sterling would curse this generation's gravitation towards sobriety.
So, Does This Mean We're All Out of Stoli?
The party's not over, yet! The bankruptcy filing mostly affects Stoli Group USA's American operations. You might see fewer bottles on the shelves, but for now, you should still be able to find your favorite flavor. I suspect the the questionable "Jalapeño (Stoli Hot)" will still be plentiful (in the discount bin).
The Future of Stoli (and Kentucky Owl)
This whole thing is a bummer, especially for Kentucky Owl bourbon, another brand under Stoli USA's wing. Remember how Kentucky Owl disappeared during Prohibition? Looks like history might be repeating itself, and it might be "a long, dark night" for the Owl.
The Bottom Shelf
The bankruptcy of Stoli Group USA is a significant development in the spirits industry. I have seen that several craft brewers (e.g. Anchor Steam) have ceased operations, but I am surprised to see a major liquor producer file for bankruptcy. Hopefully, this is not an indicator of future financial (and party) crashes.
Both Stoli and Kentucky Owl are major brands. I could see bottles getting snatched up by fans or collectors, but long term, the brands will likely come back if and when Stoli Group USA restructures its debts and emerges from bankruptcy. While the immediate impact on consumers may be limited, it underscores the challenges faced by many businesses in the current economic climate. Until we know for sure, let's raise a glass up to Stoli (and Kentucky Owl)!
