In Louisville? Grab A Sponge! Or a bucket!
In far more than an angel's share, the Heaven Hill Bernheim Distillery in Louisville reported Monday that they lost power, and subsequently lost hundreds of gallons of whiskey to a spill. If you're not familiar with the facility, it's pretty incredible. The distillery is the "world's largest independent, family-owned Bourbon distillery, producing 1,300 barrels a day."
Heaven Hill makes a bunch of bourbon brands from Larceny to Old Fitzgerald to Elijah Craig. But those are the biggies; they have a ton of other bourbons and some mighty fine whiskies, too! While they don't disclose what-whiskey-is-made-where, we do know that facility makes the namesake Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey. It would be a tragedy if even a drop of that moderately priced wheat-forward whiskey were lost. Especially if it was near the end of it's seven year aging process!
Heaven Hill has was also marked by fire tragedy back in 1996. On a night of strong, 70mph gusty winds, a fire spread from a rickhouse to neighboring storage facilities. Super hot (and colorless) alcohol flames basically became a river of flaming whiskey torching everything in its path. All told, the distillery and seven rickhouses were incinerated. What's interesting to me is that the acquisition of the Heaven Hill Bernheim Distillery was in 1999, mainly to get the distillery, its brands and its employees back to work after the 1996 disaster.
