A Luxury Whisky on a Budget Airline?

A Luxury Whisky on a Budget Airline?

Recently, I learned that in exchange for $35, you can enjoy a 50mL pour of Johnnie Walker Blue on your Allegiant Airline flights to Las Vegas.  That seems to be a total mismatch to me.

When I think of things that go together, I think of peanut butter & chocolate, yoga & kombucha, and white people and smooth jazz (my people put Kenny G on the map).  But a super-premium scotch and a budget airline?  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Johnnie Walker Blue is the most prestigious whisky in the Johnnie Walker range.  Blue Label is made up of a blend of rare and exceptional whiskies, some of which are over 60 years old. The whiskies are sourced from all over Scotland, including Speyside, Islay, and Highland.  Not to brag, but I've had it before and I remember it for being exceptionally smooth with flavors of smoke, honey, and faint fruit flavors.  But also, not to brag, I've had it before, and it's not priced to be an every day sipper.  It's not uncommon to see a bottle go for $180 - $200.  This is an "occasion / event / gift*" whisky, best savored, and even adding an ice cube is to commit whisky atrocity.  Is a proper glass included on the flight or is it better to sip from the bottle directly?

And here it is, on Allegiant Airlines, available to purchase for $35 in a 50mL bottle, and to be drank at 30,000 feet in the air.  At one point in history, I suppose that hurtling through the atmosphere in a metal tube was an occasion, but now it's just a Tuesday (Thursday for me if I have weekend performances).  But it seems strange to me that the airline that charges a fee for a Carry-on (yes, a Carry-on -- but to be clear --Allegiant charges for checked bags, too), is also the airline of Johnnie Walker's luxury whisky.

I checked my local liquor store and I can purchase the 50mL bottle for $25.  You can't legally bring on your own alcohol on a flight AND drink it in the cabin, but if you're looking for another way to enjoy a Johnnie Walker sample, there's other ways to do it.  Like in a glass.

* I mean, Christmas is right around the corner.
